Kapama River Lodge Luxury Family Safari

|Comments are Off

Kapama River Lodge Luxury Family Safari:

We stayed at the beautiful Kapama River Lodge in one of their luxury Family Spa Suites from Friday 11 September to Sunday 13 September. From the moment that we were collected at the Hoedspruit Airport by the Kapama Rangers, we felt like we were on holiday and we were treated like VIP’s. As being the type of traveller that needs at least a day or two to unwind before I can relax and enjoy myself, I instantly relaxed and felt like i was on holiday from the moment that i first set foot on the 4×4 Game viewing vehicle. We had our first “game drive” before we even arrived at the lodge.

The staff that welcome you are all amazing, from the Rangers/Guides that collect you, to the front desk/reception staff, Lodge managers, etc. By the time that you arrive at the lodge, you have been pre-assigned a Game Ranger/Guide, a Tracker and a Waiter for the complete lenght of your stay. We were very happy to have Andries as our very knowledgeble game ranger/guide and Mateo as our Top class tracker. These 2x guys make an awesome team and they provided for much excitement and excellent viewing during our stay. On the first game drive the Friday evening after we arrived, we spotted 4 of the Big 5! Over and above their excellent knowledge of the bush and wild animals, they are also very patient and kind towards children. We had a very well behaved 6 year old little boy in our group and they gave him extra special attention, making him feel safe & informed. Often some of the more scientific bush/evolution explanations were ended off by short & easy to understand explanation so that the little ones could also understand what they were witnessing. Thomas was our Manager on duty, and he went out of his way to make us feel welcome and to carefully explain the safety rules and to brief you on your programme for the weekend ahead. He made sure that you had a complete understanding of what is to be expected during your stay and  contineously checked in to see if you were still happy and enjoying yourself. Joel was a real sweetheart, our designated waiter and always served us with a smile! These guys were really great and I would definately ask for this team again, next time we go to Kapama River Lodge.

Kapama Southern Camp has mentioned that for the very little children that are not allowed on the game drives (below the age of 6 years) – they offer a bush baby drive, straight after the normal morning game drive, where the parents together with the little ones can go out for a shortened version of the game drive to show them a few animals, etc.

The food is out of this world! The vegatables and fruit are all delicious and fresh, as well as these mouthwatering meat dishes and deserts. The buffet also provides plenty options for our fussy little eaters (smaller kids) and the chef & kitchen staff are very willing to accommodate the littlelees.  Some of the other Kapama lodges even have little mini chef outfits for the smaller children and will take them into the kitchen to make pizza or cupcakes with them. (Kapama Karula)

The Family Spa Room is luxurious and very spacious with their King Size Double bed and 2x single beds. The room has a beautiful view with a lovely balcony and the big bathtub also looks out onto the  bushveld which makes you feel like you are almost having a bath “in nature”. They have a large walk in shower, with a separate toilet. The size of the large room allows for sufficient space for kids to move around in.

I strongly recommend this lodge to families who would love to go on a luxury safari, with their children. Kapama River Lodge is one of the few 5 star lodges that welcome & accommodate children of all ages (all of their camps, except for Kapma Buffalo camp, where only children from the age of 12 and over are allowed)

West Coast South Africa

West Coast Family Getaway

West Coast – Family Getaway:

Last year, my husband and I, decided to first spend time together alone with our 2 children, before we joined the rest of our family for the festive season. Coming from Johannesburg, we spend alot of time in our cars with traffic, and live in child friendly malls & coffee shops. We were looking for a place where we could enjoy the outdoors, relax, rejuvinate and spend quality time together. We longed for a place walking distance to the sea (like most of us coming from Johannesburg), as well as a place where you did not have to drive around looking for parking, etc. The last thing we wanted to do on our holiday was to be stuck in traffic or to wait & stand in cues for the shops, restaurants, etc.

After some extensive re-search, we found a beautifully, understated, coastal town called Yzerfontein, on the West Coast. It’s only an hour’s drive from Cape Town and it is a perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of the more popular beaches in the Cape area.

You can find holiday homes very close to or right on the beach, they have a private beach & a main beach, so you can decide which you prefer. The house we rented had a garden with a big enough stretch of grass for the kids to play on & it had a jacuzzi to warm you up after a cold refreshing swim in the sea. Most holiday homes in the area have a inside braai area to cater for the extra windy days. Yzerfontein is also one of the few places where you would not have to rent a home with aircon over our very hot December holiday period, as there is a constant seabreeze which cools down the town. You will find everything you need for your holiday in Yzerfontein and there is no need to stock up prior to going there. Yzerfontein also has a holiday programme offered & hosted by “I love Yzer”tourism company and they arrange lovely farmer’s markets with live entertainment and delicious eats.

We had a great family vacation ! The West Coast is pure bliss even in peak season and we will defineataly be going back for a annual “Breath of fresh air”.

The house we stayed at was no 17 in 16 Mile beach estate:

  • located on the private 16 mile beach (one sand dune away from the local main swimming beach area)
  • beautiful piece of lawn for kids to play on
  • privacy
  • shielded jacuzzi, can enjoy some time in the water, even if the wind is howling outside, protected from direct sun and wind
  • house has everything you could possible need for entertainment: potjie pot, outside chairs & tables, inside braai area for windy/rainy days, mini hi-fi (sound system) inside braai area, dstv full bouquet, downstairs guest loo, large dining room table & area, wine openers, braai tools
  • house has everything you need for little children: bunk beads upstairs with own bathroom with both bath & shower inside, lawn outside, plastic plates/bowls in both pink & blue for boys & girls in the kitchen cupboards
  • house is equipped with more than enough 2x point plug points, you can find 2x piont plug units in every single room of the house which is great especially when travelling with your smart phones/ipads/hairdryers, anything that needs ongoing charging
  • house also fully equipped with candles & matches for possible load shedding times

Local entertainment & activities:

  • The famous Strand kombuis restaurant with the best, freshest seafood you will ever find, with very good traditional quality koffie-kan locallly brewed coffee, freshly made bread,
  • tennis courts
  • There is also a swimming pool at the caravan park which holiday makers can use
  • farmer’s market/christmas market with fresh local delicatessons, wine tasting, variety of fun activities for the kids, big & small
  • local talent show/valient swart/arno carstens, etc have performed at Yzerfontein in the past

Luxury Botswana and Vic Falls fly in safari

Botswana is your ultimate wildlife viewing destination in Southern Africa . I had the opportunity to experience the Okavango Delta , Chobe National Park and Moremi in May this year . From Maun Airport we flew via light aircraft to Le Roo Le Tau .We had a fantastic time at Leroo La Tau. We did game drives and boat excursions and they were both informative and fun.The accommodation is superb and breathtaking views of the Boteti River from your balcony . The game drives on the Boteti river were magic . From Le Roo La Tau we flew via light aircraft to Camp Okavango …incredible sight flying over the Delta . There is just something about the Okavango Delta that one cant explain ….imagine being on a island in the middle of nowhere surrounded by endless plains of water and beautfiful scenery  .We were transported via speed boat to our next next Lodge situated in the middle of the Okovango Delta . The location is beautiful and the wildlife was diverse and plentiful. The highlight our Mokoro trip and bush walk on one of the island close by . We saw so much wildlife on foot and even heard lions roar in the distance . Coming so close to Elephants on foot was an incredible experience !

Our next stop was Camp Moremi situated in the Moremi Game Reserve . A wonderful camp hosting just 26 People. Our tent was spacious, meals delicious and everyone gave his or her best to make us  feel welcome and pampered.  I thoroughly enjoyed my luxury tent, with en suite shower area and flushing toilet. The bedroom contained a full king size with feather duvets. Luxruy indeed. The wildlife viewing was exceptional and the river side drives were magical . Animals roam through the camp at night, so you are escorted to and from your tent between dusk and dawn for safety reasons .Moremi is very special !

Our next stop was Chobe Game Lodge . The only luxurious Lodge inside of Chobe National Park . The rooms all look out on to the majestic Chobe River and this River never dissapoints . Chobe is famous for its Elephants so if you love Elephants and would pretty much like to see an Elephant everday on game drives then Chobe is a must . We saw so many Elephants coming down to the river and spending hours next to the river bed ..some swimming and others having a sand bath or just having an afternoon drink.  You just want to watch them for hours .On our afternoon boat game drive we went right up to a herd of Elephants swimming in the river ….magical !

The staff at all of the mentioned Lodges  cannot do enough for you and they do it with absolute cheerfulness. Desert and Delta  provides an authentic safari experience. Game drives are true hunts and the trackers are excellent as well as entertaining. The tents/lodges  are comfortable and are air conditioned by nature. The food is divine and each dinner was accompanied by African music and dance.

Should you start or end your Botswana safari in Chobe/Kasane  then it is advisable to spend 2 or 3 nights in Vic Falls . Vic Falls has so much to offer and there is a wide variety of accommodation to choose from . We spent 2 nights at the incredible Elephant Camp and 1 night at Vic Falls River Lodge . Both luxurious Vic Falls properties . There are flights departing to and from OR Tambo International airport to Vic Falls on a daily basis so if you would like to start or end your safari in Vic Falls then we will gladly arrange it for you . Vic Falls and Botswana makes a wonderful combination !

Sabi Sands Game Reserve Kruger November 2014

The Sabi Sands Game Reserve never dissapoints . The wildife viewing is exceptional ! It is by far one of our favourite Kruger destinations . The great news is that one can fly direct from Cape-Town or Johannesburg to Skukuza Airport …the flight arrives just in time for lunch and the afternoon game drive to follow . Upon arrival you will be met by your transfer driver and taken to your lodge in the Sabi Sands .The Sabi Sands entrance gate is right next to Skukuza airport …one minute you will be stepping off the plane and five minuites  later on to your game drive vehicle where your safari begins . We had the pleasure of staying at Kirkmans Camp .

Kirkman’s Kamp, with its spectacular views of the unspoiled wilderness
and of the Sand River. It is a well known historic camp, originally built in the early 1920’s, and celebrates the atmosphere of an early South African lowveld homestead, with a colonial style and gracious ambience.

Each of the 18 guest cottages has a private veranda overlooking the Sand River and is furnished in the same charming style with en-suite bathrooms. The colonial atmosphere of gracious style and luxury has been retained, and guests step back in time upon entering the original homestead, which now houses the Lodge’s sitting, dining and bar areas.

Why Visit Kirkmans Kamp :

  • Day and night game drives, walking safari and bush walks
  • Historic atmosphere of authentic 1920s Transvaal homestead
  • One of the loved lodges in the Sabi Sand and perfect for all travellers – families and children welcome
  • Imbued with the history of Harry Kirkman
  • Relaxed and social family atmosphere
  • Famed for leopard sightings
  • Big Five game reserve shares unfenced borders with the Kruger National Park, traversing 6 300 hectares (15 000 acres)

We had a wonderful time at Kirkmans and always special to visit the Sabi Sands Private Game Reserve
