Uganda

General Information

A land-locked country lying on the equator, Uganda - although bordered by many mountain ranges - actually has a fairly flat topography and much of the country lies at over 1000 metres above sea level.

Its western border with the DRC and Rwanda are dominated by rugged, forested mountains - and stunning wildlife. The Bwindi and Mgahinga National Parks are home to Uganda's mountain gorillas - and are the places to go gorilla trekking - while the lowland forest of Kibale is famous for its chimpanzee tracking. Also in the region are Uganda's 2 big game parks - the Queen Elizabeth and Murchison Falls National Parks - where the vegetation is predominantly savannah woodland.

The fertile agricultural lands of the Lake Victoria Basin dominate the south-eastern corner of the country, home to the capital of Kampala and the source of the Victoria Nile, and Uganda shares a long and mountainous eastern border with Kenya. Things change completely in the north of Uganda where a semi-desert environment signals its proximity to Sudan.
