Botswana

Getting There

Botswana's main airport is Sir Seretse Khama International Airport (35 11 91) 15km north of the capital Gaborone. Although this is well served with flights from Johannesburg (South Africa) and Harare (Zimbabwe) it is seldom used by tourists as an entry point into the country.

Far more popular are Maun Airport (66 02 38) and Kasane Airport (65 01 36). The national carrier, Air Botswana (www.airbotswana.co.bw), operates scheduled domestic flights between Gaborone, Francistown, Maun and Kasane.

Shuttle/ Charter Flights are the only way of reaching the majority of camps in the Chobe, Moremi, the Central Kalahari and Delta area. Scheduled light aircraft flights depart from Maun and Kasane and handle all inter-camp transfers in this area.

Although Gaborone, Maun, and Francistown are accessible by 2-wheel drive cars, travel into Moremi, Chobe and the Central Kalahari can only be undertaken by 4-wheel drive. Self-drive clients have access to most of the Moremi, Savute and Chobe lodges, but lodges in the Delta itself are only accessible by light aircraft.

Public transport in Botswana is geared towards the needs of the local populace and is confined to main roads between major population centres. Although cheap and reliable, it is of little use to the traveller as most of Botswana's tourist attractions are off the beaten track.
